GCSE Results 2016 - Outstanding

We are delighted that all our pupils achieved the results they deserved and are able to move on to work and college.

74% of pupils achieved the highest grades, including English and Mathematics.

Almost 20% of pupils gained at least 5 A* and A grades.

Many congratulations to all of the pupils and staff who have worked so hard to gain these outstanding results.

Eisteddfod

We ended the school year with our traditional Eisteddfod which saw Years 7,8 and 9 competing for house points in a variety of competitions. In the build up to the day, different departments in school held competitions to give the pupils a chance to earn points.

On the last day of term we held the instrumental, singing and dancing acts in the hall in front of all the year groups. Everyone who took part did really well and the day was very enjoyable. Hopkins won this year’s Eisteddfod in what was the closest competitions for many years.  It was the perfect way to end the school year.

Sports Day

We held our annual sports day just before we broke up with Years 7,8 and 9 competing for Eisteddfod points. Events included the 100m sprint, 200m, 400m, 800m, Javelin, Shot Put and Discus. After all the scores were totted up, Hopkins were declared winners in an extremely close result between the three houses. Well done to everyone who participated.

Run for Bradley

During the last week of term, Mrs Cornell organised a charity fun run in aid of Bradley Lowery Foundation. Bradley was diagnosed with Neuroblastoma aged 18 months and after a long battle, passed away in July aged 6. His foundation now raises money to help and support families with children who have a similar illness to Bradley.

Years 7 and 8 completed the run and have raised over £680 for a very worthy cause.

Wonderland

Pupils in Year 7 and Year 8 took a trip down the rabbit hole to Wonderland and through the wardrobe to Narnia last month. The activity day, organised by the English Faculty (special thanks to Mrs Williams), involved pupils entering a competition to create their own fictional world.

In preparation for their writing, pupils visited Wonderland, Middle Earth, Far Far Away, the Jungle, the Chocolate Factory, Neverland and Narnia. Their visits inspired some terrific mini sagas which have been entered in a national competition. We look forward to the winners being announced later in the year – first prize is a Kindle Fire!

National Conference

Congratulations to Amelie John, Olivia Lloyd and Leon Neilly in Year 7 who addressed Head Teachers and other professionals at a National Conference last week (along with Ms Burton, Miss Grimes, Miss Wilde and Miss Thomas).

The Conference was part of the National 3-19 Forum. Amelie, Olivia and Leon spoke to representatives there about teaching and learning at Dyffryn School and their plans to improve their own learning next academic year. They were invited as part of the Year 7 Pupil Leaders’ Programme.

Amelie, Olivia and Leon spoke with formality and confidence and did a fabulous job at representing the school on the national stage.

Primary Transition Day

We held a Year 6 Transition in our Lower School last week to introduce our new pupils starting next year to school life in Dyffryn. The pupils from our feeder primaries enjoyed a day full of different lessons, just like those they’ll have in September when they are in Year 7. Everyone enjoyed the day and all are eagerly looking forward to starting in Dyffryn in September.
